often give it a melancholy tone, but this Wolf Bros arrangement has it strolling cheerfully along and whistling a merry tune. Check out that nifty interplay at around the 5:00 mark! The ensuing trio of RatDog songs and the Little Red Rooster are alright, but they don't quite lift off like other versions we've seen from this band. The Weather Report Suite, however, might be one of the best single song performances the Wolf Bros have ever pulled off. Bob navigates through the difficult prelude, and they power into an incendiary Let It Grow. What a way to close a set!
The Ashes > Don't Let Go > Ashes sandwich that kicks off the 2nd is fantastic. The first half of Ashes is acoustic, and the soggy Don't Let Go is sure to please any Jerry Garcia Band enthusiast. Weir then gives a respectful nod to the Chicago blues hounds with a crunchy Smokestack. Watchtower is alright, but the Wharf Rat > China > Rider takes the cake. Bob doesn't quite remember every verse of Werewolves, but it's still a warmly-received cover for the occasion! He then saws through the third Dylan cover of the evening to close things out. The crowd sure got plenty of tricks and treats that night in Illinois, and you can tell that they really cheered the band on throughout. This must've been a special one to attend. WRS through IKYR is truly great stuff! Overall I'd call this show a 4.5 that rounds up to 5.0. Cheers!
